Choose your route

Where do you teach? Pick the cover that fits.

The cover changes by region. The principle doesn't. Every route runs through verified credentials and named underwriters.

UK Professional Yoga Teacher · Deep dive

Insurance is the floor. Everything you build sits on it.

A student rolls an ankle in your class. A studio asks for proof of cover before they take you on. A claim arrives nine months after a session you barely remember. None of these is hypothetical. All of them happen, in this profession, every year.

"I started YogaPros after watching a teacher get sued for something she had nothing to do with. The policy she'd been sold didn't cover what she actually taught. The cover came too late. We built this so that wouldn't happen again."
What's covered

Six million pounds of cover. Designed for the way teachers actually work.

Click any card. The headlines are everywhere. The detail underneath is what matters when something goes wrong.

£6M Professional & Public Liability · per claim
How it activates

Three steps. One direction.

Insurance does not activate until your qualifications are verified. The chain runs in one direction.

1

Build your Live CV

Upload your qualifications. Add your teaching style, experience, photos.

2

We verify

Claire's team reads every certificate. A named person, against the standard.

3

Insurance activates

£6M cover goes live. Certificate appears in your dashboard. You can teach insured.

Activation is a manual process. Please allow one business day for our team to review your details. Verification time depends on the qualification; straightforward credentials clear fastest.

What if?

Six scenarios. How the cover responds.

Click any card. The front is the situation. The back is what actually happens: who handles it, what the cover does, what timeline to expect.

Scenario 01 · Student injury

A student rolls her ankle in your Vinyasa class.

She lets you know after class she's planning to see a physio. Two weeks later, you receive a letter from a solicitor.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

This is what Professional & Public Liability is for.

  • Notify Balens (the broker) within 7 days of the letter, by phone or email.
  • Balens opens the file with Zurich; ARAG legal support is engaged at no charge.
  • You hand over correspondence; you don't respond to the solicitor directly.
  • Settlement or defence is handled by the underwriter; you contribute nothing (nil excess).
  • Most claims of this size resolve within 6–12 months without court involvement.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 02 · Venue request

A new studio asks for proof of insurance before booking you.

They want a certificate showing cover is active, valid for the dates of the booking. They need it within 24 hours.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

The certificate is in your member dashboard.

  • Log into your YogaPros account and download the current certificate of insurance.
  • The certificate names you, your cover limits (£6M), valid dates, and the underwriter (Zurich).
  • Send the PDF directly to the venue. Most studio bookers accept it without follow-up.
  • If they need a venue-specific endorsement, Balens can issue one at no charge, typically within one to two business days.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 03 · Online claim

A claim from a student you only ever taught on Zoom.

She bought a class pack last year, took the live sessions from her flat, and is now alleging an injury from a posture cue you gave on screen.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

Online teaching is covered on the same terms as in-person.

  • The policy makes no distinction between in-person and live online classes.
  • Notify Balens with what you know: date of class, payment record, the student's complaint.
  • ARAG advise on what to ask the student, what not to respond to, what evidence to preserve.
  • Your class recordings, attendance log, and pre-class waivers all become part of the file.
  • Cover responds the same way: £6M limit, nil excess, defence costs included.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 04 · Retroactive incident

A claim arrives 18 months after a class you barely remember.

The student attended a 60-minute corporate session you taught at a tech company in early 2025. The complaint references something a colleague allegedly told her was your fault.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

Claims-occurring basis means cover from when you taught.

  • The policy is on a claims-occurring basis with retroactive cover, provided you held insurance at the time the class was taught.
  • What matters for retroactive cover: you weren't aware of any claim or potential claim at the start of your current Balens policy period.
  • Notify Balens immediately; do not contact the student or the corporate client first.
  • ARAG legal cover (up to £100,000) helps fund defence costs while Zurich assesses the liability claim.
  • Records help (pre-class consultations, attendance, what was taught), but Balens have seen claims with sparse records before.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 05 · Contract question

A studio sends you a 12-page contract you don't understand.

It includes indemnity clauses you can't parse and a non-compete that looks aggressive. They want it signed by next week.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

The ARAG legal helpline is exactly for this.

  • Call the ARAG helpline on 0344 893 6911 (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm).
  • A solicitor reviews the indemnity and non-compete clauses with you, on the phone.
  • You get specific guidance on what to negotiate and what's worth walking away from.
  • If the situation escalates and a dispute develops, ARAG legal-expenses cover (up to £100,000) can fund formal advice.
  • Included in your membership. No per-call charge.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 06 · Teaching abroad

You're running a retreat in Portugal in three weeks.

The retreat venue has asked whether your insurance covers teaching there, or whether you need a separate local policy for the dates you're on the ground.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

UK members teaching abroad are covered for temporary trips.

  • The policy covers temporary trips abroad from your UK base. Portugal is fully covered.
  • The certificate shows worldwide cover with explicit exclusions: USA, Canada, Russia, and Belarus.
  • If the venue requires local Portuguese-language documentation, Balens issues it on request.
  • Cover responds in pounds sterling; claims are settled to the policy limits regardless of jurisdiction.
  • For US-based teachers a separate USA policy via Insurance Canopy applies. See the Regions section below.

If a claim arrives

Four steps. You're not on your own.

Most teachers will never use the policy. The ones who do, almost always panic on day one. There's no need. The process is structured. Here's the route through it.

1

Notify Balens

Phone or email Balens with what you know: the date, what was taught, what the student or third party is alleging. Don't respond to the claimant directly. Balens opens the file.

You · Balens
2

Balens engages Zurich

The broker passes the claim to the underwriter. Zurich confirms cover applies, allocates a claims handler, and assesses the merits. You don't have to do anything in this step.

Balens · Zurich
3

ARAG handle defence

Where legal advice or defence is needed, ARAG step in. Their solicitors take instructions, prepare correspondence, attend any meetings or proceedings on your behalf. You're informed, not exposed.

ARAG · Zurich
4

Resolution

Most claims settle without court, typically inside 6–12 months for small-to-medium incidents. Where settlement is appropriate, Zurich pays. Where defence holds, the case closes. You contribute nothing financially.

The questions members ask

Things teachers actually want to know.

Cover activates the moment your Live CV is verified. Activation is a manual process. Please allow one business day for the team to review your details. The exact timestamp is recorded on your member dashboard, and the certificate names the start date.
The excess is nil. You contribute nothing toward a claim. The cover starts at the first pound of loss and runs to the £6M policy limit per claim.
Yes. Teaching at a corporate venue, to a corporate client, or under a corporate wellness programme is covered on the same terms as any other class, provided the venue is not in USA, Canada, Russia, or Belarus. If the corporate is in the US, see the USA pathway above (Insurance Canopy underwrites a separate policy for US-based teachers).
Notify Balens anyway. A claim filed months later may rely on whether you reported the incident at the time. The policy responds best when the underwriter has a paper trail. Notifying is free, takes ten minutes, and protects you.
Yes. The full policy wording, including exclusions, definitions, and claims procedure, is available on request before you complete your Live CV. Email insurance@theyogapros.com and we'll send you the current document.
The policy covers Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Pregnancy, Kids/Teen yoga, Yoga Therapy, Meditation, and SUP Yoga (with conditions). Aerial Yoga, Acro Yoga, YogaLates, massage, and personal training are NOT included as standard. They require a multi-therapy add-on. If you've added a style through CPD (yin, restorative, prenatal, trauma-informed), you're covered. For anything outside the standard list, contact Balens first.
No. The Professional Yoga Teacher Insurance Policy covers liability: claims arising from teaching. It does not cover cancellations, refunds, or your loss of income. Those are separate products, and we don't oversell what the policy doesn't do.
The policy is on a claims-occurring basis: a claim filed after cancellation is still covered if the incident occurred during the policy period. This means no run-off cover is required. The cover doesn't disappear with the membership for past incidents. New incidents after cancellation are not covered.
A studio I'd taught at for two years asked for proof of cover before renewing my booking. I downloaded the certificate from my dashboard, sent it across, and the booking was confirmed within an hour. That's just what the policy is for.

From the founder

Insurance is the floor. Everything else stands on it.

I've watched this profession go through three decades of growth and I've seen what happens when teachers are sold cover that doesn't fit what they teach. We built YogaPros so the cover would. £6M, nil excess, retroactive, online and abroad: that's the floor. Everything else we do, the directory, the recognition, the community, the career path, sits above it.
